NYSC still relevant for nation building — Gov Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has reaffirmed the relevance of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), describing it as an enduring instrument for nation building, unity, and integration.

Makinde stated this on Friday at the swearing-in of the 2025 Batch B Stream 2 corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Iseyin.

“The NYSC, which was built on the tripod of nation building, unity, and integration by the founding fathers, has, over the years, continued to sustain itself on these lofty ideas.

“Since its inception in 1973, the NYSC has continued to promote national unity, foster integration, and encourage selfless service to the nation,” he said.

The governor, represented by the Director of Youth Development, Alhaja Kuditat Mustapha, congratulated the corps members on their successful mobilisation, urging them to take the orientation programme seriously, stating that the programme is designed to shape their perspective, instil discipline, and prepare them for service.

“As you settle into this new phase of life, I encourage you to make the most of the orientation programme. The activities you will undertake during this period, including physical training, leadership drills, skills acquisition, lectures on national issues, and community development training, are designed to shape your perspective, instil discipline, and prepare you for the tasks ahead.” Makinde said.

He reminded the corps members that their conduct during the service year would reflect their commitment to the country.

“Your conduct, attitude, and choices during this service year will reflect not just your personal character but also your commitment to nation-building,” he added.

On the role of the state government, Makinde assured the corps members of support and safety. “Oyo State Government, in partnership with the NYSC, will continue to support initiatives that ensure your safety, welfare, and empowerment. Your security is a matter we take seriously, and all necessary measures have been put in place,” he said.

The governor also urged the corps members to take the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme seriously as a pathway to self-reliance. “Many of your predecessors have become job creators through the skills they acquired during their service year. You too can become a success story,” he noted.

Makinde stressed that the oath of allegiance symbolises a call to serve with loyalty and to contribute meaningfully to their host communities. “This is a call to serve your country with loyalty, to uplift the communities you are sent to, and to leave a lasting legacy of development and unity,” he said.

The governor also encouraged them to embrace the state’s culture and contribute to its progress.

“I encourage you to explore Oyo State, engage with our people, respect our customs, and contribute to its development,” he said.

He expressed confidence that the service year would add value to both the corps members and the state.

“By the end of your service year, you would have added value to our communities, and Oyo State would have added value to your life,” Makinde said.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Oyo State NYSC Coordinator, Mr Kayode Peters, commended Governor Makinde for his consistent support of the scheme.

“Your Excellency’s commitment to youth empowerment and national development continues to provide a conducive environment for the scheme to thrive in Oyo State,” she said.

He congratulated the corps members on their mobilisation and urged them to embrace discipline and active participation during the orientation course.

“This programme is designed to instil discipline, resilience, patriotism and leadership. Your participation in lectures, drills, and the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme will prepare you for greater responsibilities,” he said.

The Coordinator also charged them to conduct themselves with dignity and obey camp rules. “I urge you to embrace teamwork, communal living, and make the most of this opportunity to grow as nation builders,” he added.

The Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Iyabo Yerima, represented by Justice M.O. Ishola, administered the oath of allegiance to formally induct the prospective corps members into the NYSC.
