Pritzker Prize-winning architect Francis Kéré has designed a tribute to Thomas Sankara, the revolutionary leader of Burkina Faso, with a memorial in Ouagadougou. The 87-meter-tall structure honors Sankara’s impactful legacy, focusing on transformation and renewal. Located at the site of Sankara’s 1987 assassination, the memorial features a challenging ramp symbolizing the struggle for change. The design includes a restaurant, media library, workshops, and offices, all interconnected by a green promenade. Scheduled for completion in 2025, this space aims to educate, unite, and offer a contemplative environment to reflect on Sankara’s principles of justice and social equity.
