Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery Resolves Labor Dispute, Ending Supply Threat

Nigeria’s Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association (Pengassan) has agreed to end its strike at the Dangote oil refinery after two days of talks with government and company officials. The labor action, triggered by the dismissal of over 800 workers accused of sabotage, threatened crude supplies to Africa’s largest refinery and could have disrupted gasoline production for domestic and international markets. Following government intervention, Dangote pledged to reassign the laid-off employees to other companies within the group without any loss of pay, averting a potential crisis. According to Devakumar Edwin, vice-president at Dangote Industries Ltd., the strike had no impact on production. However, a prolonged strike would have undoubtedly harmed the refinery’s operations.
