Why Kano Governor Abba Yusuf Defected to APC from NNPP

The Director General of the Kano State Signage and Advertising Agency, Kabiru Dakata, has dismissed claims that Governor Abba Yusuf’s exit from the New Nigeria Peoples Party was motivated by personal ambition.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Monday, Dakata said the governor’s planned move to the All Progressives Congress was intended to align Kano State with the federal government.

“APC states benefit more from the Federal Government compared to states controlled by the opposition.

“The neighbouring states that are in the APC are benefiting more from the centre than Kano State, and I don’t see it as something wrong for the centre to favour states that are under the political party — that is the APC.

“So it is not an indictment,” Dakata said.

He added that the defection would attract more funding and federal interventions.

“It’s an opportunity for the party to do better in the state controlling. If a political leader believes that he can perform better on a particular platform, I think he should be encouraged to take that step.

“That’s all about it; it is not about his personal ambition,” he stated.

Governor Yusuf resigned from the NNPP last week, amid weeks of speculation, and is expected to formally join the APC on Monday, January 26, 2026.

In his resignation letter to the Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward of the NNPP in Gwale Local Government Area, effective January 23, 2026, Yusuf cited persistent internal crises and the need to safeguard the overall interests of the people as his reasons for leaving.

The governor had previously belonged to the APC between 2014 and 2018 before moving to other political platforms.

Ahead of his official defection ceremony and registration into the party on Monday, APC flags have been hoisted at the Kano State Government House, signalling the formal return of the governor to the ruling party.

Dakata further cited a major state project that had stalled due to insufficient funds, which has now received federal support following Yusuf’s alignment with the centre.

“All three past governors tried their best — His Excellency Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

“When His Excellency Abba Yusuf came, he did part of the project and completed part of it.

“Because of this alignment, the Federal Government has approved more than ₦46 billion for the Wuju-Wuju project,” he explained.
