The management of University of Maiduguri has formally admitted a total of 6,553 students, reaffirming its resilient academic excellence despite funding challenges and infrastructural limitations.
Speaking at the Convocation Square, Mohammed Laminu Mele, who is the vice Chancellor of UNIMAID told the students, parents and guests during its 44th academic session on Tuesday, with the Faculty of Life Sciences recording the highest intake of 1,189 students ever in the history.
“Despite the difficulties we have faced, including insurgency and resource constraints, the university has remained strong.
“Discipline is the foundation of success. There will be many temptations and shortcuts along the way, but remember that true academic success must be earned. Your character will define you even more than your academic results,” he added.
Mele said students were admitted into 100 and 200 level degree programmes through UTME, Direct Entry and placements from the university’s remedial arts and science programmes, Life Sciences, Education, Physical Sciences and Engineering attracted the largest numbers.
He urged students to embrace discipline, hard work and morality. “I strongly advise you to avoid examination malpractice, cultism, drug abuse, misuse of social media and violence. The university will not tolerate acts that threaten peace and discipline on campus,” he warned.
Students found guilty of misconduct would face disciplinary measures, including expulsion and prosecution.
Professor Mele stressed the importance of dedication and personal effort. “In your classrooms, laboratories, studios and workshops, you must commit fully to your studies. Success depends on your hard work. Honesty, integrity and respect would define students more than academic results.
He thanked parents and guardians for entrusting their children to the university, assuring them of a conducive environment for learning and development.
The Registrar, Ahmad Alhaji Lawan, who administered the matriculation oath to the students, reaffirmed the University’s commitment to providing a conducive learning environment and robust support services.
He congratulated the new students and wished them success in their academic pursuits.
