British-Nigerian filmmaker Akinola Davies Jr. and his brother Wale Davies have won the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer prize at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards 2026 for their film My Father’s Shadow.

The win marks a significant milestone for Nigerian-linked filmmakers on the global stage.

The award was presented during the 79th edition of the ceremony held on February 22, 2026, at the Royal Festival Hall in London. The event brought together filmmakers and actors from across the world to celebrate outstanding achievements in cinema, with the Davies brothers emerging as one of the standout winners of the night.

My Father’s Shadow, written and directed by Akinola Davies Jr. and co-written and produced by Wale Davies, tells the story of a father and his two sons navigating life in Lagos during Nigeria’s tense 1993 election crisis. The film blends personal family drama with the broader political atmosphere of the period, drawing attention for its storytelling and cultural perspective.
Before its BAFTA success, the film had already gained international recognition after being selected for the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival, becoming the first Nigerian production to achieve that distinction. Its festival run helped build momentum leading into the awards season.
Speaking while accepting the honour, Akinola Davies Jr. dedicated the award to people whose stories are often overlooked, including immigrant families and those affected by conflict and displacement. Industry observers say the recognition highlights the growing global interest in African narratives and filmmakers.
The 2026 ceremony also celebrated several other notable winners. The film One Battle After Another claimed major prizes including Best Film and Best Director, while British-Nigerian actress Wunmi Mosaku won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Sinners.
For many in the film industry, the Davies brothers’ victory represents an important moment for Nigerian storytelling, reinforcing the country’s growing presence in international cinema and opening doors for more filmmakers from the region to reach global audiences.
