South Africa pushes forward with genocide case against Israel

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared that a recent US-brokered Gaza ceasefire will not derail the country’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). He emphasized that the legal pursuit remains a separate path toward achieving lasting justice and reconciliation, asserting that true peace cannot exist without accountability. The case, filed in 2023, accuses Israel of genocidal acts in Gaza and is supported by a growing coalition of nations, including Spain, Ireland, and Turkiye. While the ICJ has already issued provisional measures, the full legal process is expected to continue for years, with a final judgment anticipated around 2028. South Africa also co-chairs The Hague Group, a coalition dedicated to ensuring Israel is held accountable through various legal and diplomatic channels beyond the courtroom.
