The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria has urged the police and judiciary to ensure swift and impartial justice in a reported rape case, warning that intimidation, harassment, or diversionary tactics must not undermine the investigation.
In a press statement, HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, expressed concern over reports suggesting attempts to shift focus away from the central issue of sexual abuse.
“The allegation of rape, especially involving a vulnerable individual, is a grave criminal matter that demands the highest level of diligence from investigators and the judiciary,” Onwubiko said.
HURIWA noted that the survivor had publicly shared her experience on the human rights programme Brekete Family, highlighting the seriousness of the claims, which require thorough and unbiased investigation.
“The justice system must protect survivors, not frighten them into silence,” the group stressed, urging the Nigeria Police Force, prosecutors, and the judiciary to ensure the focus remains on the allegations and that survivors and their families are shielded from secondary victimization.
The organisation also called on child protection agencies and the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs to safeguard the safety and psychological welfare of survivors while legal processes unfold.
“Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done. Nigerian authorities must send a clear message that sexual violence will not be tolerated and that survivors will be protected rather than persecuted,” HURIWA added.
