The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a suspected kidnapper and recovered an AK-47 rifle during an operation in Keana Local Government Area of the state.
The arrest followed a raid on a suspected kidnappers’ hideout at Gidan Akuya village.
In a statement made available to journalists in Lafia on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel, said the operation was carried out by operatives of the State Intelligence Department acting on credible intelligence.
He said, “Upon sighting the operatives, the criminals attempted to flee the scene but were immediately pursued by the police.
“During the operation, one suspect, identified as Jibril Yunusa, 43, was arrested. A search of the hideout led to the recovery of the following exhibits: one AK-47 rifle, one empty magazine and one locally fabricated rifle.”
According to Nansel, the suspect confessed during interrogation to participating in several kidnapping activities within the Keana and Awe axis.
He added that the suspect had provided useful information to assist ongoing investigations.
The police spokesman said the Commissioner of Police, Shetima Mohammed, had directed operatives to intensify efforts to track down and arrest other members of the gang who fled during the operation.
“While commending the operatives for their professionalism and dedication, the Commissioner of Police reassures residents of Nasarawa State of the command’s unwavering commitment to combating crime and ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state,” the statement added.
