Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing food security through economic diversification by significantly increasing investment in agriculture across the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Delta, like many regions in Nigeria, has heavily relied on a crude oil-led economy, overlooking the vast opportunities in commercial crop farming and animal husbandry.
As part of efforts to transform the state’s agricultural sector, Oborevwori has inaugurated a high-level delegation to visit one of Brazil’s largest ranches, targeting development and foreign investment attraction.
A statement issued Saturday in Asaba said the Delta delegation commenced a working tour in Brazil, engaging ranch officials, inspecting agricultural facilities, and identifying potential collaboration areas with the host country’s agro-experts.

The visit aligns with the governor’s broader vision to diversify the economy, boost food production, and generate sustainable employment. Key areas include livestock management, dairy production, pasture development, and agro-processing.
Dr Barry Gbe, Chief Economic Adviser to the Governor and head of the delegation, said the state remained committed to transforming its agriculture through strategic alliances and global best practices adoption.
“Brazil is renowned for its advancements in livestock and ranching, and we believe that collaboration in this sector will bring immense benefits to our people,” Gbe said in his remarks.
He explained that the administration sought to adopt successful Brazilian agricultural models, strengthen local capacities, and attract direct investments into Delta State for long-term agricultural and economic growth.
The Brazilian hosts, led by Mr Gustavo Monaco, welcomed the collaboration, noting Nigeria’s vast market and Delta State’s fertile landscape as significant advantages for sustainable agro-business development.
NAN reports that both parties agreed to extend discussions beyond the visit, exploring practical opportunities for investment, agricultural knowledge exchange, and the integration of advanced technology into Delta’s farming systems.
Oborevwori aims to position Delta State as a top agribusiness hub in Nigeria and West Africa by enabling investment, empowering local farmers, and embracing international agricultural expertise.
The delegation is expected to submit a comprehensive report with strategic recommendations for launching pilot ranching programmes and other impactful agricultural projects across all regions of Delta State.
Delegates include Mr Val Arenyeka (Agriculture Commissioner); Mr Charles Aniagwu (Works – Rural Roads); Mr Samuel Oligida (Trade and Investment); Mr Anthony Elekeokwuri (Investment Agency DG); and Mr George Orogun (Investment Adviser).
