…L-PRES deploys weather monitoring systems to aid livestock farmers
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) have strengthened collaboration to improve weather monitoring and climate information services aimed at boosting livestock productivity and resilience across Nigeria.
According to a statement from the agency, the renewed partnership was highlighted during a courtesy visit by Sanusi Abubakar, National Coordinator of L-PRES, to Charles Anosike, Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, in Abuja.
As part of efforts to enhance weather observation and provide accurate climate data for livestock farmers, L-PRES handed over four Automatic Weather Observation Systems (AWOS) to NiMet.
The equipment is expected to strengthen the country’s weather monitoring network and provide localized data that can support better decision-making in the livestock sector.
Speaking during the visit, Abubakar congratulated Anosike on the recent public release of NiMet’s 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction, noting that the agency’s climate services play a critical role in supporting agricultural planning and productivity.
He said collaboration with NiMet is vital to the success of L-PRES in its mission to build resilience within Nigeria’s livestock value chain, particularly in the face of increasing climate variability and extreme weather conditions.
According to him, access to reliable weather information will help livestock farmers anticipate climate risks, manage grazing resources more efficiently, and adopt climate-smart production practices.
In his remarks, Anosike commended L-PRES for procuring and donating the AWOS units, describing the gesture as a significant contribution to strengthening Nigeria’s weather observation infrastructure.
He explained that the new weather stations would be installed in rehabilitated grazing reserves across the country to generate accurate, site-specific weather data for livestock farmers and other stakeholders.
Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to sustained collaboration, emphasizing that improved climate services and technological innovation would play a crucial role in safeguarding Nigeria’s livestock industry, improving farmers’ livelihoods, and promoting sustainable agricultural development.
