Nigerians to pay more for vehicle licensing as JTB hikes prices

Nigerians will soon face substantially higher costs for vehicle documentation as the Joint Tax Board (JTB) has announced major price increases for motor vehicle and motorcycle number plates and driver’s licenses nationwide.

The steep price hikes, which take effect on Sunday, June 8th, 2025, will impact all vehicle owners across the country.

JTB made this known via an announcement on ThisDay newspaper.

Standard private and commercial number plates that previously cost ₦18,750 will now jump to ₦30,000. The increase is even more dramatic for fancy number plates, which will skyrocket from ₦200,000 to an eye-watering ₦400,000.

Motorcycle owners aren’t spared either, with number plates more than doubling from ₦5,000 to ₦12,000. Articulated number plates will now cost ₦90,000, a massive increase from the former price of ₦30,000. Out-of-series number plates have seen one of the steepest jumps, from ₦50,000 to ₦150,000.

Driver’s license fees follow the same upward trend. Motor vehicle drivers will now pay ₦15,000 for a three-year license, up from ₦10,000, while a five-year license increases from ₦15,000 to ₦21,000. For motorcycle and tricycle operators, three-year licenses rise from ₦5,000 to ₦7,000, and five-year licenses from ₦8,000 to ₦11,000.

The JTB claims these substantial price hikes are due to “the introduction of enhanced security features in the number plates and driver’s licenses, and incidental increases in production costs.”

As the apex body for revenue authorities in Nigeria, the JTB has instructed all government agencies and Motor Vehicle Licensing Authorities to implement these higher fees immediately when they come into effect.

Nigerians seeking to obtain or renew their documentation must apply through the National Vehicle Identification System portal at nvis.frsc.gov.ng or visit their nearest Vehicle Licensing Authority office, where they will encounter these inflated prices.
