Nigeria sympathises with Southern African countries hit by deadly floods

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sympathy and solidarity with the governments and people of South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe following devastating floods that have killed more than 100 people and displaced thousands across parts of Southern Africa.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, Nigeria, conveyed its condolences over the tragic loss of lives and widespread destruction caused by weeks of torrential rainfall that led to rivers overflowing their banks and flooding vast communities.

According to the statement, the floods have resulted in extensive human and material losses, including the destruction of roads and bridges, large-scale displacement of populations, and severe disruption to agricultural production and essential social services.

The Nigerian government also expressed concern over the secondary humanitarian challenges emerging from the disaster, such as food insecurity, the risk of disease outbreaks, and increased vulnerability of women, children and other at-risk groups.

Nigeria commended the ongoing rescue, evacuation and relief operations being carried out by national authorities in the affected countries, in collaboration with regional bodies and international humanitarian partners.

The government acknowledged the resilience and determination of South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe as they respond to the disaster and commence efforts toward recovery and rebuilding.
