Nigeria Recovering Steadily Under Tinubu, Says Gbenga Daniel

A former governor of Ogun State and Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, on Sunday expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, asserting that the country is steadily recovering from its previous economic challenges under President Bola Tinubu and that the worst is over.

Daniel praised Tinubu’s economic reforms, including the floatation of the naira, subsidy removal, and decisive measures to tackle insecurity, saying these initiatives are already putting the nation on a strong footing.

He, however, lamented that many Nigerians are quick to label all politicians as liars and thieves, forgetting that some leaders continue to uphold the legacy of selfless service pioneered by the late sage and first Premier of the Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who died in 1987.

Daniel made the remarks while speaking at the annual family Thanksgiving held on Sunday at Abraham Tabernacle, Sagamu, Ogun State.

Daniel thanked God for preserving Nigeria and for granting Tinubu the vision and leadership needed to create an enabling environment for measurable progress.

He said, “First and foremost, we thank God Almighty for His preservation. We must also thank the President and Commander-in-Chief for providing the enabling environment and the time to move the nation forward. In recent times, we have seen clear efforts to address the problem of insecurity.

“Inflation had risen sharply, but we are now hearing that it is beginning to ease. Despite these difficulties, we must continue to thank God Almighty, and we hope that this new year will be an unforgettable one in our country. Nigeria, as I have said before, can only get better.

“The worst is over. I believe that gradually and steadily, things will continue to improve.”

Daniel also highlighted the importance of prayers in overcoming the nation’s challenges, noting, “When you look around—at this massive gathering—you will see that over 200 clergymen came together simply to pray for Nigeria. That tells me we are making progress. We all need to pray more for our nation and our hardworking President so he can do so much more for the betterment of Nigeria.”

The senator further expressed concern over the trust deficit in Nigerian politics, emphasising that while many citizens quickly brand politicians as dishonest, some leaders, including himself, remain committed to serving the people in the footsteps of Chief Awolowo.

He added, “We know that it is the season of politics, and some Nigerians often do not appreciate politicians. You have always believed that all politicians are thieves, so whenever we step forward, you think we are spinning lies. However, some of us follow the path of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, whose works and selfless service remain an enduring legacy.

“We are trying hard to serve without blemish, and we trust God will continue to help us. There is certainly much deceit in politics, but for over 20 years, I have endeavoured to serve the people faithfully. As another political season approaches, the wise know what is right.”

Daniel also recounted his ongoing socio-economic contributions, including the distribution of thousands of empowerment tools such as motorcycles, grinding machines, freezers, and sewing machines, facilitation of road projects and boreholes, and sponsoring eye surgeries for over 4,000 people in the state.

He pledged to continue serving the state and complement government efforts to improve the lives of Nigerians.

The Thanksgiving Service was attended by prominent figures, including lottery magnate, Sir Adebukola Kensington, Mrs Bola Obasanjo, wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK, Ambassador Sarafadeen Tunji Ishola, Dr Olatokunbo Dosumu-Awolowo, and 2023 PDP gubernatorial candidate in the state, Oladipupo Adebutu.

Also present were NADECO chieftains Chief Ayo Opadokun and Senator Femi Okurounmu, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State Mr Femi Pedro, former Minister of State for Health Dr Olorunmbe Mamora, and traditional rulers from across the state.

Speaking with journalists at the event, 2023 PDP governorship candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu, said that despite current hardships, Nigerians should remain hopeful.

He said, “The timetable for political activities will soon be released. This is a delicate period for the nation, especially with the challenges Nigerians face.

“However, our God is the God of grace and mercy, and I believe He will intervene to make things better. Better days are surely ahead, so we must not lose hope.”
