NDDC Mourns Bayelsa Deputy Governor, Suspends Projects

The Niger Delta Development Commission has extended its condolences to the Government and people of Bayelsa State over the death of the state’s Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

The commission also announced the suspension of the inauguration of projects earlier scheduled for December in Bayelsa State as a mark of respect for the late deputy governor.

This was contained in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Monday and jointly signed by the Chairman of the NDDC Governing Board, Mr Chiedu Ebie, and the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Dr Samuel Ogbuku.

According to the statement, the commissioning of projects initially slated for December 16, 2025, has been suspended in honour of the deceased.

“As a mark of respect for the departed Deputy Governor, the NDDC Board and Management have shelved the commissioning of projects in Bayelsa State, which was initially scheduled for December 16, 2025,” the statement partly read.

The commission described Ewhrudjakpo as a man of candour, unwavering commitment and exceptional dedication to public service, noting that these virtues earned him a reputation as a tireless and workaholic deputy governor.

It recalled his contributions to the development of Bayelsa State, particularly during his tenure as Commissioner for Works, where he played a key role in advancing infrastructural development.

The statement also highlighted his service as Senator representing Bayelsa West in the 9th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, where he was said to have demonstrated competence, vision and a strong passion for the welfare of his constituents.

“His life was defined by service, sacrifice and a resolute commitment to the common good,” the commission stated.

According to the NDDC, Ewhrudjakpo served Bayelsa State and Nigeria with humility, sincerity and patriotism, adding that his leadership was marked by integrity and simplicity.

“His legacy of selfless service, principled leadership and devotion to humanity will endure and continue to inspire generations yet unborn,” it added.

The commission prayed for comfort and strength for the family, government and people of Bayelsa State, while asking God to grant the late deputy governor eternal rest.

Recall that Bayelsa State was thrown into mourning following Ewhrudjakpo’s death after a brief illness on Sunday, December 14, 2025. His death sparked an outpouring of tributes from political leaders, institutions, and stakeholders across the Niger Delta and beyond, in recognition of his decades of service to the state and the country.

Ewhrudjakpo was widely regarded as a seasoned administrator and dedicated public servant. He previously served as Commissioner for Works in Bayelsa State, where he played a key role in advancing infrastructural development, and later represented Bayelsa West Senatorial District in the 9th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. His tenure in public office was marked by diligence, accessibility, and a strong commitment to grassroots development.

As Deputy Governor, Ewhrudjakpo was known for his hands-on approach to governance and close involvement in policy implementation, earning him a reputation as a tireless and principled leader. His sudden passing prompted the Bayelsa State Government to suspend official activities and declare a period of mourning in his honour.

In line with this, several organisations and government agencies, including the Niger Delta Development Commission, adjusted their programmes in the state as a mark of respect, underscoring the impact of Ewhrudjakpo’s leadership and the esteem in which he was held within the region.
