Lagos govt reopens Purple Lekki Mall after safety clearance

Following a comprehensive investigation by the Lagos State Government and relevant regulatory bodies into the recent tragedy that occurred at its fifth-floor parking deck, Purple Lekki Mall has been cleared of any structural or code violations.

In a press briefing held at the Mall’s premises, Tokunbo Wahab, commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, stated: “We called for all supporting documents and an investigation after the incident. And in fairness, at the end of the day, we found out that due diligence was observed and that they have the necessary paperwork. We were satisfied with our own administrative end of the investigation.”

In addition to state-level clearance, Purple Lekki Mall also received necessary federal approvals as applicable, a rare occurrence for most private businesses, which speak to the strength of its compliance and the credibility of its building codes.

Safety first

Purple’s management has also taken additional steps to include more safety measures and continuously align with the highest global best practices. While enhancement work commences, and as investigations close out, the multi-level parking has been suspended, as visitors will be made to use the ground floor parking lots.

“We are deeply saddened by the incident and have reached out to the family to express our condolences,” said a Purple Lekki Mall spokesperson. “Safety has always been a priority, and we are working to introduce additional safeguards, which will be communicated in due course.”

The Lagos State Government also reaffirmed its commitment to public safety and transparency, assuring that all procedural steps are being diligently followed.
