Guinness World Records (GWR) has subtly referred to attendees who gathered to support Hilda Baci during her world jollof rice attempt as “hungry Nigerians”.
GWR made the remark in a statement posted on its official website on Monday.
“A video posted to Hilda’s Instagram account shows the jollof rice being served up to all the hungry people (Nigerians) who’d gathered in support and had to suffer through all those amazing smells before finally being able to dig in,” GWR wrote.
TRIBUNE ONLINE reports the Nigerian chef reclaimed her spot in the Guinness World Records after cooking an unprecedented 8,780 kg (19,356 lb 9 oz) of Nigerian-style jollof rice on Friday, September 12 at Victoria Island, Lagos, in partnership with Gino Nigeria.
The vibrant event drew thousands, blending culinary prowess with cultural pride as Nigeria stakes its claim in the ongoing Nigeria-Ghana jollof rivalry.
Baci, whose real name is Hilda Bassey, orchestrated a nine-hour culinary marathon using a massive pot filled with 4,000 kg of basmati rice (making up at least 80% of the dish’s weight), 164 kg of fresh goat meat, 220 kg of Gino Asun and peppered chicken cubes, and 600 kg of her signature jollof pepper mix.

Powered by 1,200 kg of gas, the effort yielded 16,600 plates of steaming rice, served with “joy, love, and community” to eager attendees chanting, “Hilda, we want jollof!”
The record attempt adhered to strict Guinness World Record guidelines, ensuring no food was wasted.
Videos shared on Baci’s Instagram captured the crowd’s excitement as they savored the dish, with many praising its rich flavor.
“I didn’t realize it would be this hard. It’s been a challenge, but it’s incredibly satisfying to achieve this record. This belongs to all Nigerians who contributed to this moment,” Baci admitted.
The event, marked by live performances and communal spirit, reignited the debate over West Africa’s best jollof, with Nigeria’s preparation methods and ingredients taking center stage.
Baci’s triumph not only celebrates culinary excellence but also underscores the unifying power of food in Nigeria’s cultural landscape.
