Gombe Gov Vows to Enhance Security & Economy for Workers

The Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, on Friday, joined workers in the state to commemorate the 2026 International Workers’ Day at the Pantami Township Stadium.

Represented by his Deputy, Manassah Jatau, the governor extended congratulations to the workforce, emphasising the significance of the global celebration.

“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the entire workforce in Gombe State on this year’s International Workers’ Day. This day is celebrated globally to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of civil servants to good governance,” he said.

Jatau lauded the resilience and commitment of workers, linking their efforts to the state’s development.

“Your resilience, unwavering commitment, and dedication have continued to drive the development of our dear state,” he stated.
He also underscored the relevance of the 2026 May Day theme, “Insecurity, Poverty – Bane of Decent Work,” noting its reflection of current realities.

“Insecurity and poverty have significantly impacted Nigeria’s economy and the livelihoods of citizens. There is an urgent need to address these challenges decisively,” he said.

Highlighting the importance of collective responsibility in tackling insecurity, the deputy governor added, “Ensuring security is not the sole responsibility of security agencies; it requires a collective effort from all citizens. Since inception, this administration has prioritised security through active collaboration with security operatives to protect lives and property.”

He stressed the link between security and economic growth, urging workers to support government efforts.

“Addressing insecurity is critical to combating poverty and boosting our economy. I urge all civil servants to support government’s efforts in maintaining peace and security,” he said.

Jatau also encouraged workers to improve their capacity.

“I encourage you to enhance your skills and improve your contributions in your respective offices for the greater good of governance,” he added.

On gender inclusion, he noted, “No job is reserved strictly for a particular gender. The recent training of fifteen women as truck drivers by Ashaka Cement Plc is a testament to the progress we are making in empowering women economically.”

Responding to demands by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), he assured workers of the government’s commitment to their welfare.

“I assure you that this administration remains committed to the well-being of workers. Your demands will be forwarded to His Excellency for prompt consideration, and we will continue to ensure regular payment of salaries and other entitlements,” he said.

In his remarks, the Gombe State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Yusuf Bello, commended the state government for its support.

“We commend the Gombe State Government for its remarkable support to the workforce, particularly in clearing long-overdue gratuities from 2012 to date, which has brought relief to many families,” he said.

He also acknowledged improvements in the working environment.

“The construction of the Three-Arm Zone as a modern administrative hub is a commendable step toward improving working conditions for civil servants,” Bello added.

On the theme of the celebration, NLC representative Comrade Aish Bello said, “This year’s theme is apt and timely, considering the prevailing insecurity challenges that have affected economic growth and led to a high cost of living across the country.”

He outlined key demands of the union.

“We call for enhanced monthly pension adjustments, recruitment to fill gaps in the civil service, and the revitalisation of the Gombe State Printing and Publishing Company, which is currently struggling due to outdated equipment,” he said.

The union expressed optimism about continued collaboration with the government.

“We are confident that the government will continue to support these initiatives to ensure a better future for workers and citizens,” he added.

In his vote of thanks, the State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress, Comrade Auwalu Abdu, described the gathering as more than a celebration.

“This event is not just a celebration, but a platform to appreciate the government’s role in ensuring security and peace in the state,” he said.

He urged workers to remain united.
“I call on all workers to embrace unity and support government efforts in combating insecurity for the prosperity and peaceful coexistence of our state,” Abdu stated.
