Gabon has taken a significant step in its political transition with the organization of its first legislative elections since the 2023 coup. The Democratic Union of Builders (UDB), the party of current President General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, secured a strong lead in the elections, winning 55 out of 145 National Assembly seats. This outcome solidifies the political influence of the leader who ousted the long-ruling Bongo dynasty. In a notable shift, the former ruling party, the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), managed to secure only three seats independently. In some constituencies, the UDB and PDG ran jointly, taking four seats. A second round of voting is scheduled for several constituencies where no single candidate achieved an absolute majority, setting the stage for the final composition of the new parliament.
