Ex-Newcastle striker Alan Shearer has strongly criticised VAR, arguing that it is actually making refereeing standards worse rather than better.
As reported by BBC Sport on Saturday, speaking after Newcastle United’s FA Cup win over Aston Villa, Shearer pointed to a series of controversial decisions in a match without VAR as evidence of the problem.
He said the game showed “the damage VAR has done to referees.”
According to him, officials now look “petrified to make decisions” without the technology as a safety net.
According to him, these errors led Shearer to suggest that referees have become too dependent on VAR and struggle when it’s not available.
