Brighton’s Jack Hinshelwood came off the bench to score a dramatic late winner in a 3-2 victory over Liverpool on Monday, extending the newly crowned Premier League champions’ winless run since securing the title.
Liverpool took the lead early through Harvey Elliott at the Amex Stadium, but Yasin Ayari soon equalised for the hosts. Dominik Szoboszlai restored Liverpool’s advantage before halftime, only for Brighton to mount a late comeback. Kaoru Mitoma levelled the score before Hinshelwood struck with his first touch to seal all three points.
Arne Slot’s side have now failed to win in three straight matches since their title-clinching win over Tottenham on April 27, managing just one point in that stretch. They’ve lost to Brighton and Chelsea and let a two-goal lead slip in a draw against Arsenal.
Liverpool will lift the Premier League trophy in front of their home fans on Sunday in the season finale against FA Cup winners Crystal Palace, followed by an open-top bus parade through the city on Monday.
Reflecting on the loss, Slot said, “Great game of football, but not the result we wanted. If you don’t score the third goal then it’s hard to win at this level, especially away from home. We cannot miss chances like we did.”
Despite the loss, Slot praised Harvey Elliott’s performance and noted some positives from Federico Chiesa. However, he admitted it’s been difficult to keep his squad fully focused since clinching the title.
