APGA Hails Signing of New Electoral Act 2026 into Law

The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Grand Alliance has commended the passage of the Electoral Act 2026 and praised President Bola Tinubu for granting immediate assent to the bill.

The party noted that the enactment would ensure certainty in the electoral process and strengthen the preparations of the Independent National Electoral Commission for the 2027 general elections.

This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of its NWC meeting held at APGA’s South-East Regional Secretariat in Awka on Friday.

The committee also lauded innovations in the Act, including provisions on party primaries and the digitisation of membership databases, describing them as consistent with global best practices and supportive of internal party democracy.

It expressed grave concern over the prevailing insecurity in various parts of the country, which has led to loss of innocent lives and destruction of property, and urged the President to intensify efforts to end the scourge of insecurity nationwide.

The communiqué read in part,”The APGA NWC commends the leadership of the National Assembly for the prompt passage of the Electoral Act, 2026. The NWC further notes and commends the innovative introductions in the new Electoral Act, particularly regarding the mode of primary elections by political parties and the digitisation of membership databases.

“The NWC also calls on all members of the party, intending members, and indeed all progressives to take advantage of the window of opportunity provided by the ongoing Electronic Membership Revalidation and Registration Exercise to register as members of the foremost progressive party in Nigeria, APGA.”*

The party also congratulated the Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, on his swearing-in for a second term, noting that his developmental strides in the state contributed to APGA’s massive victory in the last gubernatorial election.

It urged Soludo to continue fulfilling his campaign promises to Ndi Anambra, with the aim of making Anambra a livable and prosperous smart megacity.

In response to disturbances in the FCT Chapter, the NWC approved the immediate dissolution of the State Working Committee, local government executive committees, and ward executive committees of the FCT Chapter.

The party stated that a Caretaker Committee will be duly constituted and notified to INEC, in line with APGA’s constitution.

“The NWC approved the convening of Stakeholders’ Summits and Conferences across the six geo-political zones as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections. The party extensively deliberated on the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2026 APGA primaries, as well as the electoral guidelines for the primaries. Consequently, the NWC unanimously approved and ratified the 2026 APGA electoral guidelines and timetable for the primaries,” it stated.

The NWC also commended the combined efforts of security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force and the Armed Forces, in tackling insecurity across the country, especially in Northern Nigeria.

It further praised the Senate leadership under Senator Godswill Akpabio and other Senators who defended democracy and constitutional order concerning the alleged unlawful defection of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe from APGA.

“The NWC calls on the Senate to invoke relevant provisions of the Constitution and declare his seat vacant, in light of his betrayal of the mandate entrusted to him by the people of Abia South Senatorial District,” the communiqué stated.

The party also urged all officers at every level to observe discipline and uphold decorum, particularly in the lead-up to the 2026 APGA primaries, warning that disciplinary measures would be taken against officers who violate the party’s constitution or engage in unwholesome conduct during the primaries.
