Ahead of Monday’s court ruling, PDP governors urge supporters to remain calm

The Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF) on Sunday appealed to party members nationwide to remain calm as the Court of Appeal in Abuja prepares to deliver judgment on appeals filed by the party.

The ruling, expected on Monday, is considered a landmark decision that could determine the future direction of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The forum is currently made up of Governors Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Mohammed Lawal of Zamfara State.

Emmanuel Agbo, Director-General of the PDP Governors’ Forum, in a statement issued on behalf of the forum on Sunday, assured that the party would abide by the decision of the Court of Appeal.

“We stand at a defining moment for our democracy. The judiciary, as the custodian of justice, carries the weight of ensuring fairness, impartiality and the preservation of national stability.

“Whatever the decision may be, the PDP reaffirms its respect for the judicial process and its commitment to peace,” the statement said.

The party, which is currently embroiled in an internal crisis, was forced to abandon the last Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) due to the leadership dispute.

Once the dominant political force in Nigeria, the party has also been operating outside its traditional headquarters at Wadata Plaza and Legacy House in Abuja as a result of the crisis.

However, the PDP-GF urged its supporters and Nigerians in general to remain calm and disciplined in their reactions to the court ruling.

About nine different cases bordering on the conduct of the November 15 and 16 national convention in Ibadan, the legitimacy of the current National Working Committee (NWC), among other issues, are expected to be determined by the Court of Appeal on Monday in Abuja.

“Our collective response must reflect maturity and a deep respect for the rule of law. We call on all party members and leaders to show maximum restraint, remain calm and be law-abiding before, during and after the judgment, as the leadership will meet immediately to review the judgment and chart the necessary post-judgment line of action,” the statement added.

The forum noted that “democracy thrives on diversity of voices, competition of ideas and the ability of citizens to choose from credible alternatives,” adding that the PDP would continue to embody these values.

It therefore called on party members with aspirations to contest the 2027 general elections to maintain confidence in the party’s platform.

The statement assured aspirants that the party would protect and support their political ambitions.

“Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, the PDP remains resolute in its mission to provide Nigerians with a strong, credible and people-centred alternative. No ruling can erase the will of Nigerians for a fair and competitive political system.

“We are prepared to participate fully in the democratic process, ensuring that the voices of the people are heard and respected.

“The judiciary has always remained the most impartial and people-oriented arm of government, whose tireless defence of the constitution has ensured the stability of our democratic governance,” the statement said.
