AFCON 2025: Morocco see off Cameroon to book first semi-final since 2004

Hosts Morocco booked their place in the semifinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a 2-0 win against Cameroon in Rabat.

Goals in each half from Brahim Díaz and Ismael Saibari sealed a comfortable victory for the Atlas Lions, who largely nullified their opponents and faced little sustained pressure throughout the contest.

Morocco took the lead in the 27th minute through Díaz, who continued his outstanding form at the tournament.

The midfielder struck from close range after Ayoub El Kaabi flicked on a corner, registering his fifth goal in five matches at AFCON 2025.

The Atlas Lions maintained their structure and discipline for the remainder of the first half, limiting Cameroon’s attacking threat while posing danger from set pieces and on the counter.

The decisive second goal arrived in the 74th minute when Saibari doubled Morocco’s advantage with a composed left-footed finish. The move originated from a free-kick, with Nayef Aguerd supplying the assist to put the hosts firmly in control.

Cameroon attempted to mount a response but struggled to break down Morocco’s well-organised defence, as the hosts managed the closing stages with authority.

The Indomitable Lions, five-time African champions, created few clear chances, with Manchester United forward Bryan Mbeumo failing to exert significant influence on the game.

Morocco, Africa’s top-ranked side and 2022 World Cup semi-finalists, are under intense pressure to lift the AFCON on home soil, 50 years after their last continental triumph. Despite doubts over their ability to handle expectations, the hosts remain firmly on course.

The victory marks Morocco’s first AFCON semi-final appearance since their defeat in the 2004 final against Tunisia.

The host will face the winner of the quarter-final clash between Algeria and Nigeria, scheduled for Saturday.
