Dele Momodu refutes VP ambition, backs opposition coalition

Media entrepreneur and publisher, Dele Momodu, has dismissed reports suggesting he plans to run as vice-presidential candidate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, saying he has no intention of contesting any election.

In a statement shared on his Facebook page on Thursday, Momodu described the circulating claim as a distraction and urged supporters to ignore it.

“When I first received this poster from a friend, I dismissed it as a joke designed to distract us… I will be most grateful if my friends and party members can do me the honour of ignoring this joke,” he said.

He added, “I’m not running for any race again. I’m interested in humbly supporting the coalition of political parties, to work together and oust the incompetent APC government.”

Momodu said he would instead support candidates within the African Democratic Congress, noting that there are “more than enough leaders” in the party more competent to contest.

His comments come amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition figures exploring coalition options to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Momodu also criticised what he described as the “bullying” of Atiku, noting that Peter Obi had previously run alongside him in 2019.

He urged restraint in political discourse, cautioning against abusive rhetoric across party lines, including attacks on President Bola Tinubu.

Momodu maintained that he would support whichever candidate emerges from his party, adding that his focus remains on coalition-building within the opposition.

The development underscores ongoing efforts within opposition ranks to consolidate alliances and resolve internal differences ahead of the 2027 elections.
