EPL: Cunha fires Man United to vital win over Chelsea

Manchester United secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, dealing a major blow to the Blues’ hopes of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

A first-half goal from Matheus Cunha proved decisive, as Michael Carrick’s side strengthened their grip on third place in the Premier League standings.

United took a significant step towards securing a return to Europe’s elite competition, capitalising on a clinical moment despite being second best for large periods of the contest.

Chelsea, managed by Liam Rosenior, saw their struggles continue as they slumped to a fourth consecutive league defeat, only the second time this has happened this century. Alarmingly, the Blues have failed to score in all four losses and have not found the net since early March.

The home side created several clear chances but were denied by the woodwork on three occasions, with Estevao Willian, Liam Delap and Wesley Fofana all striking the frame of the goal. Chelsea also dominated possession and registered more shots, shots on target and a higher expected goals tally.

However, Manchester United’s efficiency made the difference. Bruno Fernandes delivered a precise cutback for Cunha, who finished first-time to score the only goal of the match. The assist marked Fernandes’ 18th of the league season, leaving him just two short of the Premier League record.

The result marked only United’s second league win at Stamford Bridge since 2002, a milestone celebrated enthusiastically by the visiting fans.

Frustration boiled over among Chelsea supporters, who jeered their team at full-time after chanting “we want our Chelsea back” during the game. Protests against the club’s ownership group, BlueCo, had already taken place before kick-off, reflecting growing discontent as their Champions League ambitions continue to slip away.
