The National Association of Nigerian Students has commended Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress in the state over the endorsement of the Senator representing Ogun West, Solomon Olamilekan, popularly known as Yayi, as the party’s candidate for the 2027 governorship election in the state.
PUNCH Online reports that Abiodun had earlier on Monday, openly named Yayi, as the APC consensus choice for the party’s 2027 governorship ticket in the state.
The endorsement came during a strategic APC caucus meeting of party leaders and stakeholders on Monday, where discussions centred on succession plans and preparations ahead of the next election cycle.
NANS, in a statement on Monday by its National Public Relations Officer, Samson Adeyemi, described the endorsement as a “bold and strategic decision that reflects the party’s commitment to continuity, progressive governance, and youth-inclusive leadership.”
NANS noted that the development signalled a positive step towards strengthening democratic values and ensuring purposeful leadership in the state.
Adeyemi stated, “We consider this endorsement a bold and strategic decision that reflects the party’s commitment to continuity, progressive governance, and youth-inclusive leadership.
“As representatives of Nigerian students, we view this development as a positive step towards strengthening democratic values and ensuring purposeful leadership in Ogun State.”
Commending the lawmaker, the association said Adeola had demonstrated a record of service, particularly in education, youth empowerment, and infrastructural development.
“His legislative contributions and empowerment initiatives have directly and indirectly impacted countless students and young people,” the statement read.
NANS also hailed Abiodun for what it described as purposeful leadership and for supporting a transition process anchored on “competence, credibility, and grassroots connection.”
“This level of political foresight is commendable and necessary for sustaining the developmental strides already recorded in the state,” it added.
The association expressed confidence in Adeola’s capacity to deliver inclusive governance, noting that his endorsement reflects the aspirations of youths and students in the state.
“We believe that the endorsement of Senator Adeola reflects the aspirations of Ogun youths and students who desire responsive, inclusive, and forward-looking governance,” the statement noted.
While pledging support, NANS urged the lawmaker to sustain engagement with students and young people, stressing its commitment to advocating policies that promote educational advancement and socio-economic growth.
It also called on political stakeholders to uphold democratic principles and ensure a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process ahead of the 2027 elections.
