Tuesday’s weather: Hail, severe thunderstorms, rain in North West; warm, cool elsewhere

Severe thunderstorms with strong winds, hail, excessive lightning, and heavy downpours are expected in the south-western parts of the North West and north-western parts of the Free State, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS). Cool and warm conditions are expected elsewhere in the country.

Impact-based warning

Yellow Level 2 warning of severe thunderstorms with strong winds, hail, excessive lightning, and heavy downpours are expected in the south-western parts of the North West and the north-western parts of Free State. These conditions may lead to flooding and localised damage to infrastructure, property, and livestock.

In the SAWS’s colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that a higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation.

The SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and level 4 is low.
