Update: Death toll of Jos Palm Sunday attack rises to 28 as residents recover more bodies

The death toll from the recent attack in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau state on Palm Sunday night has risen to 28, as more bodies were discovered at the scene, deepening fears and outrage among residents. 

The grim reality unfolded as corpses were seen lying on the ground at the time of this report, indicating a higher casualty figure than initially confirmed. 

Earlier, the Nigeria Police Force, Plateau state Command had confirmed 14 deaths following the incident. “Our officers, including members of the Command’s Management Team, PMF Squadron Commanders, DPOs, and Tactical Team Commanders, are fully deployed to the area to ensure law and order is maintained”;the statement said.”Joint operations involving all security agencies within the State are ongoing to apprehend or dislodge the suspects in accordance with the law. We urge citizens to provide any accurate information to assist the investigation”; the statement added. The statement explained that about 8:30 p.m. on March 29 2026, the Command received a distress call reporting gunshots around the Angwan Rukuba axis.

The commissioner of police, Ewah Bassey personally led a team to the scene to reduce tension and restore calm in the general area.The Police confirmed that the 14 corpses of the victims have been evaluated at the mortuary for autopsy while investigations continue to track down the perpetrators.The statement noted that efforts were being intensified to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

The Command while expressing  grief with the Government of Plateau State and the people of Angwan Rukuba Community noted that manpower and operational resources have been deployed under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations to forestall further breakdown of law and order.

 

However, when a team of journalists visited the scene  the number had increased significantly, with 28  recovered so far, while efforts to locate additional victims were ongoing.

The directive was conveyed in a statement signed by Joyce  Ramnap, Commissioner for Information and Communication, on behalf of the state government, made available to Journalists Sunday night in Jos said the restriction will take effect from midnight of March 29 to April 1, 2026.

 

“The Plateau State Government in conjunction with security agencies wishes to inform the general public of the imposition of a 48-hour curfew within Jos North Local Government Area with immediate effect, commencing from 12 midnight of 29th March to 1st April, 2026″.

“The government under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang strongly condemns this barbaric and unprovoked attack on innocent citizens and assures the public that all necessary measures are being taken to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice”; the statement said. The government urged residents to remain calm, stay vigilant, and cooperate fully with security agencies by providing useful information to aid ongoing investigations into the incident.

Meanwhile, after the official statement, Caleb Mutfwang, the governor visited the scene of the heinous attack where he commiserated with the bereaved families and vowed to ensure that the perpetrators of the evil act are brought to justice.

During the visit, the Governor announced plans for a befitting burial for the deceased and assured that the Plateau State Government will take full responsibility for the medical bills of those injured and currently receiving treatment in various hospitals.Governor Mutfwang also appealed to citizens—particularly traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community stakeholders—to join hands with the Government in addressing the prevailing security challenges in the state.

He reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace, strengthening security, and fostering unity across Plateau State.BusinessDay reports that security agencies continue recovery efforts and have intensified measures to restore calm in the area.
