Five South African women have been arrested at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, after they were allegedly found to be carrying drugs.

Five South African women were arrested at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Saturday, after they were allegedly found to be carrying drugs.

The police seized the drugs, believed to be worth more than R5 million.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, preliminary reports suggest that the women were en route to China via Dubai.

“A search led to the discovery of drugs concealed inside their sneakers, underwear, and private parts. The suspects are expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges related to drug trafficking,” Van Wyk said.

Several high-profile drug busts have taken place at the airport in the last year, including that of a Brazilian man who was intercepted at OR Tambo airport with R1.4 million of cocaine strapped to his legs. The arrest took place in May.

In July, a 25-year-old Brazilian woman was arrested at OR Tambo airport with R4.2 million worth of cocaine hidden in her luggage.
