Political violence resurfaces in Rivers as thugs attack Amaechi’s ADC unit

Thugs have reportedly destroyed the African Democratic Congress’ chapter secretariat in Ubima Community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Ubima is home to two former governors of the state: Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation and ADC top member, and Celestine Omehia.

The attackers reportedly fired sporadically at Amaechi’s family residence in the early hours of Friday March 6, 2026

The attack occurred just hours ahead of Amaechi’s expected visit to the community for ADC’s ongoing membership registration.

Party sources said last night’s attack is the second one on ADC members in the state in recent months.

One such incident was the alleged attack on party members in Igwuruta Community during a sensitization program.

The Rivers State Police Command is yet to issue a statement on the incident.

Meanwhile, Amaechi on Friday, March 6, 2026, officially registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress in his hometown, Ubima.

The former Transportation minister, who was received by a huge turnout of supporters, has been described as a leading ADC figure in the South-South of the country and a presidential hopeful.

Supporters say his membership in the ADC “is a historic and bold step that has undoubtedly energized the opposition coalition movement in the Niger Delta.”

“Rotimi Amaechi is not the typical Nigerian politician. He has distinguished himself following his selfless leadership prowess, uncommon courage, exemplary bold initiatives and standing by the truth irrespective of influencing tension or pressure,” they said.
