EPL: Arsenal restore five-point lead after London derby win over Chelsea

Arsenal regained their five-point Premier League lead following a tense 2-1 victory over London rivals Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Mikel Arteta’s side struck twice from corners while also conceding from the same route, highlighting the growing impact of set-pieces in the title race.

William Saliba opened the scoring with his first goal since December 2024, giving Arsenal the lead in the first half. Chelsea equalised just before the break through an own goal by Piero Hincapie from a Reece James corner.

The winner came in the second half as Jurrien Timber headed home a corner to secure three crucial points, with Chelsea’s Pedro Neto later sent off for a second yellow.

The victory marks Arsenal’s second successive league win, restoring their five-point cushion over second-placed Manchester City, who have a game in hand after beating Leeds 1-0 on Saturday.

After criticism over their recent form, Arsenal have responded strongly, following last weekend’s 4-1 rout of Tottenham with a nervy but vital triumph.

Arsenal travel to Brighton on Wednesday with nine games remaining in their bid for a first English league title since 2004. Their top-flight schedule includes just one more match against a current top-six side, a potentially decisive clash at Manchester City on April 18.

Chelsea, meanwhile, extended their winless run to three games, a setback to their hopes of securing Champions League football next season. They slipped to sixth under Liam Rosenior, losing to Arsenal for the third time during his brief tenure.

The win lifts Arsenal to 64 points, five clear of Manchester City, with one extra game played.
