Lagos firefighters rescue 84-year-old man from deep well


The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has rescued an 84-year-old man who reportedly fell into a deep well in the Aboru area of Lagos.

The incident occurred at No. 35A, Fadeyemi Street, Pipeline, Aboru, in the Agbado Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area.

According to the agency in a Tuesday statement signed by its Controller General, Margaret Adeseye, a distress call was received at exactly 10:09am, prompting the immediate deployment of rescue personnel to the scene.

“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service received a distress call at exactly 10:09 hours concerning a rescue incident at No. 35A, Fadeyemi Street, Pipeline, Aboru, Agbado Oke-Odo LCDA,” the statement read.

It added that rescue officers from the agency, alongside personnel from the Abesan Fire Station, arrived at the location at 10:20am.

The statement disclosed that the victim, an 84-year-old man, had recovered from a well estimated to be about 140 feet deep.

“The incident involved an 84-year-old male adult who reportedly fell into a well estimated to be about 140 feet deep,” the service said.

Preliminary findings by the rescue team suggested that the incident may have been a case of attempted suicide, as the well was reportedly secured.

“Preliminary observations suggest a suspected case of attempted suicide, as the well was adequately protected and securely covered,” the agency noted.

The victim was successfully rescued alive and handed over to his family for further care, while investigations into the incident are ongoing.

“The victim was successfully recovered by the rescue team and subsequently handed over to the family members for further necessary attention. The exact cause of the incident is subjected to further investigation,” the statement added.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service reiterated its commitment to timely emergency response and urged residents to promptly report emergencies through the appropriate channels.
