Analysing Xabi Alonso’s 232-day reign at Real Madrid

Real Madrid on Monday parted ways with head coach Xabi Alonso following a run of inconsistent results, capped by a 3–2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday.

Appointment and High Expectations

Alonso was appointed on June 1, 2025, signing a contract scheduled to run until June 30, 2028, as Real Madrid sought a fresh tactical identity under a manager coming off notable recent success.

Widely regarded as a club legend from his playing days, Alonso returned amid high expectations after winning multiple major trophies during his career at the Bernabéu.

Stats in 232 Days in Charge

The 44-year-old spent 232 days in charge, overseeing 34 matches with a reported win rate of 70.6 percent. His overall record stood at 24 wins, four draws and six defeats, with Madrid scoring 76 goals and conceding 24.

Statistically, his biggest result was a 5–0 victory over Kairat Almaty, while the most celebrated win was a 2–1 El Clásico success over Barcelona.

Heavy Defeats and Big-Game Concerns

Alonso’s tenure was also marked by painful setbacks. The heaviest defeat came in a 4–0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain, while a 5–2 defeat to Atlético Madrid proved particularly damaging. Madrid’s struggles against elite opponents with comparable resources are believed to have weighed heavily in the decision to end his tenure.

End of a Short-Lived Project
