Riyad Mahrez scored a first-half penalty as Algeria sealed qualification for the knockout rounds of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a 1–0 victory over Burkina Faso in their Group E clash in Rabat on Sunday.
The 2019 champions ended a run of two successive group-stage exits thanks to Mahrez’s composed spot-kick, awarded after Ismahila Ouedraogo’s clumsy challenge in the area.

The former Manchester City winger, who scored twice in Algeria’s opening 3–0 win over Sudan, calmly sent his effort low into the corner, leaving goalkeeper Hervé Koffi rooted to the spot.
Burkina Faso responded with intent, with Pierre Kabore twice going close to an equaliser before the break.
The Stallions continued to push after half-time but did not register an effort on target until the 82nd minute, as Algeria remained disciplined and dangerous on the counter.
At the other end, Koffi was kept busy, producing a series of fine saves to deny Algeria from extending their lead as the North Africans looked to exploit space on the break.
The result leaves Algeria top of Group E on six points. Burkina Faso and Sudan are level on three points following Sudan’s 1–0 win over Equatorial Guinea earlier on Sunday, a result that confirmed the Equatoguineans’ elimination.
Speaking after the match, Algeria head coach Vladimir Petkovic praised both sides for their efforts.
“It was a really hard match with two strong teams who fought for 90 minutes,” Petkovic said.
Algeria will face already eliminated Equatorial Guinea in their final group match, while Burkina Faso take on Sudan in a decisive clash for the second automatic qualification spot. Both matches will be played on New Year’s Eve.
