Ghana panel proposes longer presidential term

Ghana’s constitutional review committee has proposed extending the presidential term from four to five years, while keeping the two-term limit intact, as part of broader governance reforms. The panel, appointed by President John Mahama, also recommended lowering the minimum age for presidential candidates from 40 to 30, a move that could widen political participation. In addition, it called for capping ministers and deputies at 57 and barring sitting lawmakers from those roles, aiming to curb the bloated cabinets of past administrations. This move follows a campaign promise by Mahama to strengthen governance after his decisive election victory. Lawmakers must now review the suggestions before they can be presented to the public in a national referendum. If approved, these reforms would represent the most substantial amendments to Ghana’s constitution since its adoption in 1992.
