AFCON 2025: Super Eagles survive Tunisia scare to seal knockout qualification

Three-time African champions, the Super Eagles of Nigeria, survived a late scare to claim a hard-fought 3–2 victory over Tunisia in their AFCON 2025 Group C clash in Fez, sealing qualification for the knockout stage with a game to spare.

Goals from Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi and Ademola Lookman proved decisive as the Super Eagles secured their second win of the tournament and moved to six points, guaranteeing top spot in the group.

Nigeria began on the front foot, asserting control through sustained possession and quick ball circulation. Their early dominance produced a series of chances, with Tunisia repeatedly stretched by crosses and set pieces.

The breakthrough arrived late in the first half when Osimhen rose highest to power a header into the bottom corner from Ademola Lookman’s delivery, opening his account at the tournament and giving Nigeria a deserved 1–0 lead at the interval.

Momentum stayed firmly with the Super Eagles after the restart. Five minutes into the second half, Ndidi doubled the advantage, heading home Lookman’s corner.

Tunisia struggled to cope with the tempo as Nigeria continued to press with confidence. The lead was extended to 3–0 in the 67th minute when Lookman finished calmly off the post after an unselfish assist from Osimhen, seemingly putting the contest beyond reach.

Montassar Talbi pulled one back in the 74th minute with a header from a free kick, shifting the momentum. Pressure mounted, and drama followed when a VAR review awarded Tunisia a penalty. Ali Abdi converted in the 87th minute to reduce the deficit to 3–2 and set up a nervy finale.

Nigeria will now turn their attention to their final group fixture against Uganda on Tuesday, December 30.
