Two members of the Kano State House of Assembly, Aminu Saad Ungogo and Sarki Aliyu Daneji, have died within hours of each other, the legislature confirmed on Wednesday.
Ungogo, who represented the Ungogo constituency and chaired the assembly’s committee on appropriation, collapsed at the assembly complex after a brief illness. He was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
Less than an hour later, the death of Daneji, the lawmaker representing Kano Municipal constituency, was also announced. Details surrounding his death were not immediately disclosed.
The deaths prompted an outpouring of condolences from political leaders in Kano and beyond.

Barau Jibrin, Nigeria’s deputy senate president, described the losses as irreparable, offering prayers for the lawmakers’ families and constituents.
“I mourn the passing of two members of the Kano State House of Assembly who died today,” Jibrin wrote on X. “My heartfelt condolences go to their families, their constituents and the Kano State Government.”
The speaker of the assembly, Jibril Falgore, also expressed grief over Ungogo’s death in a statement issued by his chief press secretary, Kamaluddeen Shawai.
He described Ungogo’s passing as a major loss to the state, noting that the lawmaker died while actively performing his duties at the assembly.
“Hon. Ungogo died while in active service at the Kano State House of Assembly,” the statement said. “He is survived by his wife and children.”
The speaker added that the lawmaker’s death came at a critical time when the people of Kano needed his contributions the most.
