Oyo Assembly cautions members against politicising legislative mandate

… passes vote of confidence on Makinde-led administration

Oyo State House of Assembly has cautioned its members against leveraging on the legislative institution to curry favour from their constituents or the general public.

This is because its members passed a vote of confidence on the Governor Seyi Makinde-led administration for the developmental strides in all the sectors of the economy.

Presiding over the plenary after a six-week recess on Tuesday, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin said the Assembly would not tolerate any act that is inimical to the legislative business of the House.

He submitted that since the Assembly would not castigate or intimidate any of its members for making their position known on any issue, it is also wrong on the part of members to play politics with the mandate given to them by their constituents.

Ogundoyin said, “We are not here to castigate anyone neither are we here to victimize any member.

“In the Oyo State House of Assembly, we understand the mandate given to each member by their various constituencies. The mandate was neither given by the executive arm nor the Assembly but by the constituents.

“We are all answerable to our constituents. Therefore, we should not deprive the innocent people of quality representation. It will be an act of irresponsibility on our part to do something contrary to the mandate given to us.

“Also, if some members, because we are entering the political season, want to use the legislative institution to get an undue advantage because of what they lack in terms of quality representation, it will not work.

“If they, (members) are trying to gain sympathy from the public or constituents, public or party hierarchy or wherever they think they think they can gain sympathy from using the House of Assembly, I put it to you today, scrap the plan, it is better for you to go back to your constituency, listen to your people, know where shoe pinches them, come back here, move motion, enter offices, summon commissioners, discuss with the governor at appropriate time and push for the project for your constituency.”

In another development, the Assembly has lauded Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration for its bold developmental strides, particularly in the areas of infrastructure, governance reforms, and local government development across the state.

Hon. Olajide Akintunde, representing Lagelu State Constituency, commended the successful completion of the House’s oversight visits to all the 33 local government areas in the state.

He noted that the exercise provided valuable insights into the status of ongoing projects and the performance of local government administrations.

Hon. Akintunde also applauded the peaceful and orderly conduct of the just-concluded ward congresses of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

In his contribution, Hon. Olatunde Kehinde, representing Akinyele State Constituency 2, highlighted Governor Seyi Makinde’s recent rollout of strategic road infrastructure projects across Oyo State.

He emphasised that a significant portion of the recently approved N300 billion facility will fund the rehabilitation and reconstruction of roads, which are vital for economic growth and connectivity.

The Majority Leader, Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin, praised the launch of the Oyo State Subnational Implementation Strategy for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), describing it as a visionary move that positions the state as a key economic player within the continent.

He, thereafter, moved a motion formally endorsing the policies and direction of the Seyi Makinde-led administration, which was seconded by the Chief Whip, Hon. Gbenga Oyekola.

Deputy Speaker, Hon. Muhammad Abiodun Fadeyi, added his voice to the commendations, stressing that the Governor’s initiatives in health, education, and infrastructure have significantly improved the lives of citizens across the state.

In his closing remarks, Ogundoyin reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to good governance and transparency.

He assured that the 10th Assembly is focused on delivering its legislative responsibilities without bias or witch-hunting.

Ogundoyin encouraged all lawmakers to remain diligent, constructive, and responsive to the needs of their constituents.
