Nine-time champions Nigeria’s Super Falcons produced a sensational comeback to defeat hosts Morocco 3–2 in a thrilling final of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Saturday in Rabat, clinching their record-extending 10th continental title.
The dramatic victory also served as sweet revenge for the Super Falcons, who were knocked out by Morocco in the semi-finals of the 2022 edition.
The home side made a dream start, going 2–0 up within the first 25 minutes. Captain Ghizlane Chebbak opened the scoring in the 12th minute, and Sanaâ Mssoudy doubled the lead with a clinical finish in the 24th minute, sending the packed stadium into a frenzy.
But the Super Falcons, known for their resilience, came out fighting in the second half. Esther Okoronkwo began the comeback with a well-taken penalty in the 64th minute, and just seven minutes later, Folashade Florence Ijamilusi struck a powerful equaliser to level the tie.
With momentum on their side, Nigeria pressed forward and was rewarded late in the game, sealing the 3–2 victory and sparking wild celebrations.
Head coach Justine Pwanidi Madugu handed the start to first-choice goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, with Osinachi Ohale and Michelle Alozie anchoring the defence.
Nigeria advanced to the final after edging South Africa 2–1 in a closely fought semi-final, while Morocco booked their spot with a penalty shootout win over Ghana.
The victory reinforces Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football and adds another glorious chapter to the legacy of the Super Falcons.
