Chinese embassy probes alleged abandonment of Nigerian miners in Central African Republic

The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria said it is investigating a viral video showing a group of Nigerian miners allegedly abandoned by a Chinese mining enterprise in the Central African Republic (CAR).

The Embassy, in a statement, said it was taking the incident seriously and is working to determine the facts surrounding the situation.

The video, which has been circulating online, purportedly shows Nigerian nationals left stranded by their Chinese employer under unclear circumstances.

“The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria attaches great importance to this matter and has initiated an immediate investigation, which continues to ascertain the facts,” the Embassy said.

The Chinese government reiterated its position that all Chinese companies and citizens conducting business abroad are required to operate in accordance with local laws and regulations.

It emphasised that compliance with the legal frameworks of host countries remains a strict obligation for all Chinese enterprises overseas.

In response to the situation, the Embassy said it would engage the involved company to ensure the matter is handled appropriately and responsibly.

“The Chinese side will urge the involved companies to address this matter appropriately, maintain close communication with Nigerian authorities throughout the investigation, and work together to safeguard the lawful rights and interests of citizens of both nations,” the statement added.
