2026 World Cup: Osimhen brace fires Super Eagles to CAF play-off final

The Super Eagles of Nigeria kept their 2026 FIFA World Cup hopes alive after a Victor Osimhen brace inspired a 4-1 extra-time victory over Gabon in the semi-final of the CAF play-offs in Rabat, Morocco, on Thursday night.

Nigeria started strongly, dominating possession and creating early chances through Bright Osayi-Samuel and Osimhen, whose header struck the post in the 17th minute. Despite their pressure, Gabon held firm, and the first half ended goalless.

The breakthrough came shortly after the restart when Sevilla striker Akor Adams latched onto a loose ball to fire Nigeria into the lead. However, Gabon equalised late in the 89th minute through Mario Lemina, forcing the match into extra time.

In extra time, Nigeria’s quality shone through. Chidera Ejuke restored the lead with a composed finish after being set up by captain Wilfred Ndidi, before Osimhen struck twice, his 29th and 30th international goals, to seal an emphatic win for the Super Eagles.

With the victory, Nigeria advanced to Sunday’s play-off final, where they will face the winner between DR Congo and Cameroon for a place in the Intercontinental Play-Offs in March 2026.

The result eases the tension around the camp after a turbulent week and keeps alive the Super Eagles’ dream of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
